SEO and AI search
Search engines and AI assistants, such as ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity, read more than the words on your pages. Ignite adds structured data that tells them exactly what you sell, what it costs and whether it’s in stock.
Find the main settings in the theme editor under Theme settings > SEO & GEO. GEO stands for generative engine optimization: making your store easy for AI assistants to understand, quote and recommend.
What Ignite adds for you
Structured data, also called schema, is information hidden in the page code that describes the page in a standard format. Customers never see it. With the default settings, Ignite adds:
| Schema | Where | What it describes |
|---|---|---|
| Product | Product pages and the Featured product section | Name, description, images, brand, price, stock, SKU, condition and star ratings, with each variant listed separately. |
| CollectionPage | Collection pages | The collection and the products in it. |
| Article | Blog posts | The headline, author, dates and image. |
| BreadcrumbList | Pages with breadcrumbs | Where the page sits in your store. |
| Organization | Home page | Your store’s name, logo and social profiles. |
| SearchAction | Home page | Your store’s search, so search engines can offer a search box for it. |
| FAQPage | Collapsible rows sections, when turned on | Questions and answers. |
Product schema options
Schema on product page and featured product section has four options:
- Theme: the default, and the right choice for most stores.
- Theme - extendable: the same, plus your own specifications, pros and cons, and returns policy from the Structured product data section. See below.
- Shopify: Shopify’s own product schema. We recommend it for products with more than 250 variants.
- None: no product schema. Only choose this if an app adds its own, so you don’t end up with two.
Schema on collection pages and Schema on article page can be turned off in the same way. Turn off any schema that an SEO app already adds.
The Structured product data section
This section adds detail that the standard product schema can’t include. It’s invisible to shoppers, and it’s one of the most useful things you can do for AI search, because it gives assistants exact facts to quote.
- In Theme settings > SEO & GEO, set the product schema to Theme - extendable.
- Open your product template and click Add section, then choose Structured product data.
- Add blocks for the facts you want to describe, and connect their values to metafields so each product has its own.
- Repeat for every product template, then click Save.
| Block or setting | Use it for |
|---|---|
| Specification | A named fact, such as Display: 6.8" OLED, 144Hz. Add one block per fact. This is the most useful block for AI assistants. |
| Product attribute | A standard attribute that search engines already recognize: material, country of origin, model, manufacturer, award, slogan or keywords. Each can be used once. |
| Pro or con | A short plus or minus point, such as “Battery lasts two full days”. Search engines can show these as a pros and cons list. |
| Returns | The countries your returns policy covers, the number of days and whether returns are free. |
| Show preview while editing | Shows what the section outputs, in the theme editor only. |
Other settings
- Add store name to title tags: adds your store’s name to the end of every page title, as in “Edge Pixa 9 – Ignite”. Turn it off if your page titles already include it.
- Add schema to breadcrumbs, Add Organization schema to home page and Add SearchAction schema to home page: all on by default.
More ways Ignite helps AI search
- FAQ schema: in the Collapsible rows section, turn on Generate FAQPage Schema.org. Only use it on a real FAQ page. See FAQ page.
- Comparison table AI text: in the Product compare section, write a one- or two-sentence summary of the comparison for AI assistants.
- Link descriptive text: cards in Multicolumn, Gallery and other sections that link somewhere without any text of their own should have this filled in, so search engines and assistants know where the link goes.
- Heading tag: most sections let you choose H1, H2 or H3 without changing the look. Use one H1 per page, then H2s for the main sections.
A practical SEO and GEO checklist
- Write a unique title and description for every product and collection in its Search engine listing in your Shopify admin.
- Put the facts customers ask about, such as size, materials, compatibility and what’s in the box, in the product description or a Table block, not only in images.
- Add alt text to every product image. See Image sizing.
- Answer real customer questions on an FAQ page, with FAQ schema turned on.
- Add the Structured product data section with your key specifications.
- Keep your store fast. Speed affects rankings. See Theme speed.
- Check for errors with Google’s Rich Results Test. Warnings about missing optional fields are normal, because Shopify doesn’t hold every piece of data.
Common questions
Does Ignite add schema markup to product pages?
Yes. By default Ignite adds product structured data with the name, description, images, brand, price, stock, SKU and star ratings, including every variant. Change it in Theme settings > SEO & GEO.
What is GEO?
GEO, or generative engine optimization, means making your store easy for AI assistants to understand and recommend. Clear product facts, structured data and honest answers to common questions all help.
How do I add product specifications to my structured data?
Set Schema on product page and featured product section to Theme - extendable, then add the Structured product data section to every product template and add a Specification block for each fact.
How do I get FAQ schema on my Shopify store?
On your FAQ page, turn on Generate FAQPage Schema.org in the Collapsible rows section.
Will structured data guarantee rich results in Google?
No. It makes your pages eligible and easier to understand, but search engines decide what to show.
