Extras and custom code

Extras is where Ignite keeps the useful odds and ends, including the safest place to add tracking codes and scripts: they stay put when you update the theme.

Find these in the theme editor under Theme settings > Extras.

Add code without editing theme files

Apps, ad platforms and analytics tools often ask you to paste a snippet into your theme. Paste it here instead of editing theme files, and it stays in place when you update Ignite.

SettingWhere the code goesUse it for
<head> tag code (Liquid/HTML)Just before </head>Verification tags, tracking pixels and styles.
<body> tag code (Liquid/HTML)Just before </body>Scripts, chat widgets and code that reacts to JavaScript events.
Example: <head> tag code
<meta name="p:domain_verify" content="your-code-here">
Example: <body> tag code
<script>
  document.addEventListener('cart-add', (event) => {
    console.log('Added to cart', event.detail.variantId);
  });
</script>

Both fields accept Liquid, so you can show code only on some pages, such as {% if template.name == 'product' %}.

Browser tab message

Type a short message in Browser tab message, such as “Come back, your cart misses you”. A few seconds after a customer switches to another tab, it replaces your page title in their browser tab, which can draw them back. You can include an emoji.

  • Open links to other websites in a new tab: on by default, so customers don’t lose their place in your store when they follow a link to another site.
  • Lazy load JavaScript: on by default. Scripts for features further down the page load only when they’re needed. Keep it on.
  • Preload links on hover: on by default. The next page starts loading as soon as a customer hovers over a link, so it opens faster. Keep it on.

See Theme speed for more on how these help.

Payment and pickup icons

  • Custom payment icon: adds your own icon beside the payment icons from Shopify, for a payment method Shopify doesn’t show. Use a small SVG with the same wide shape as the other payment icons.
  • Store pickup icon: the icon shown with local pickup availability on product pages: a bag with a check mark, a box, a check mark in a circle, an information circle, a storefront or a truck.

Common questions

Where do I add a tracking code or verification tag in Ignite?

Paste it into Theme settings > Extras > <head> tag code. It’s added to every page, and it carries over when you update the theme.

What is the browser tab message?

A short message that replaces your page title in the browser tab a few seconds after a customer switches to another tab, such as “Don’t forget your cart!”.

Should I turn off “Preload links on hover”?

Usually not. It starts loading the next page when a customer hovers over a link, which makes your store feel faster.
