Age verifier

Stores selling alcohol, vapes and other age-restricted products often need visitors to confirm their age before they enter. Ignite’s age verifier asks once, then gets out of the way.

Add the age verifier

  1. In the theme editor, find the Overlays group at the bottom of the sidebar.
  2. Click Add section and choose Age verifier. In Overlays, it shows on every page.
  3. Edit the Heading, such as “Are you 21 or older?”, and the text below it.
  4. In the Buttons block, set the labels for Yes and No, and the message shown when someone clicks No.
  5. Click Save.

The age verifier appears as soon as the page loads, over a dimmed store, and has no close button. Clicking Yes closes it, and it won’t show again on that device. Clicking No shows your message instead, and the popup stays in place.

Design

  • Image: add one beside the text, above or below it, or as the background. On mobile it can go at the top, bottom, background, or be hidden.
  • Position on desktop and mobile: from a corner to the middle of the screen.
  • Maximum text width, Content padding and Color scheme.
  • Add more blocks if you need them, such as a caption, an icon or your logo as an image.

Testing

Once you’ve clicked Yes on your own device, the age verifier won’t show again, which makes it hard to check. Set Mode to Test mode to see it on every visit, then switch back to Normal mode.

The age verifier asks visitors to confirm their age. It can’t check that they’re telling the truth. Depending on what you sell and where, the law may require more, such as age checks at checkout or on delivery. Check the rules for your products and countries.

The age verifier works like Ignite’s Popup section, so the same layout options apply.

Common questions

How do I add an age verification popup in Shopify with Ignite?

In the theme editor, open the Overlays group, click Add section and choose Age verifier. Edit the heading, text and buttons, then save.

Will customers be asked every time they visit?

No. Once a customer clicks Yes, the age verifier doesn’t show again on that device.

Is an age verifier enough to meet the law?

Not always. It asks visitors to confirm their age, but it can’t prove it. Check what the law requires where you sell. Some products need age checks at checkout or delivery too.
